Painted Hills & John Day Fossil Beds, Mitchell, Oregon
The colorful rock formations at John Day Fossil Beds preserve a record of plant and animal evolution, changing climate, and past ecosystems that span over 40 million years. Distinguished by varied stripes of red, tan, orange, and black, this area preserves a sequence of past climate change. It was a scorching hot day in June with no shade, but we walked here for hours with even more beautiful vistas around the next corner.
